Welcome to the Maryland Exiles Women's Rugby Club

The Maryland Exiles Women's Rugby Club is a newly formed women's rugby team centered in Montgomery County, Maryland. We play "fifteens" and "summer sevens" rugby against the local senior and college women's teams, as well as in various tournaments along the East Coast. Practices are held Monday and Wednesday evenings in the Rockville/Silver Spring area during the fall, spring, and summer seasons, and we are currently holding weekly winter practices. Games and tournaments typically fall on Saturdays about twice a month.

Club History

MDX Women was formed in Fall 2006 by two former University of Maryland rugby players, Veronica Okapalobi (co-founder of the UMD Women's team) and Alina Espinosa.  With the help of Tosan Tutse-Tonwe (co-founder and Assistant Coach of the UMD Women's team and player from the Maryland Exiles Men's team), they rallied support from the president of the Maryland Exiles Rugby Club to create a women's side team.

  During the winter of 2006-2007 our team held Saturday clinics to work on rugby fundamentals and focused on recruiting new players.   In January 2007 Maryland Exiles Women's Rugby Club became a recognized team by the PRU, allowing us to play other teams in the union.  In spring 2007 we played three games and entered several "sevens" tournaments over the summer.  This past fall we had a very successful season, competing against both women's and collegiate teams.

At this point our team is still heavily recruiting new players.  We are always eager to welcome new players regardless of age or experience level.   We truly are a group of fun-loving, energetic women looking to have a good time and keep fit.  If you are interested in joining the team please feel free to stop by a practice or contact us with any questions, comments, or concerns you may have.  We hope to hear from you soon!!!!
